A self-paced plan is a good fit for many dogs who bark, lunge or freeze at other dogs on leash. Some dogs need hands-on help first. This isn't a failure on your part. It's the safest path for your dog and for everyone around them.
See your vet first if
- The reactivity started suddenly, or got much worse quickly
- Your dog limps, flinches when touched, or seems sore anywhere
- There are other changes, like in eating, sleeping or toileting
Pain and other medical problems can change behavior. The AVSAB position statement notes that a veterinarian should check for medical factors behind behavior problems. Ruling these out comes before any training plan.
Work with a behavior professional first if
- Your dog has bitten or tried to bite a person or dog, including a hard snap or broken skin
- Your dog growls, lunges or snaps at people, not only at dogs
- You feel unsafe handling your dog on walks
In these cases, a qualified professional can watch your dog in person and build a plan around them. You can often use a structured program alongside their advice.
Who to look for
- Veterinary behaviorist. A veterinarian with specialist training in behavior (DACVB). They can diagnose, and prescribe medication where it helps.
- Certified applied animal behaviorist (CAAB).
- Certified behavior consultant (IAABC).
- Certified professional dog trainer (CCPDT).
Ask any professional how they train. Look for someone who uses reward-based methods and doesn't use prong, choke or shock collars. See why we don't use them.
Staying safe in the meantime
- Give other dogs plenty of room. Distance is your best tool. See threshold distance.
- Walk at quiet times, on quiet routes.
- Consider teaching your dog to wear a basket muzzle comfortably, slowly and with lots of food.
- Keep hard days easy: trigger stacking makes reactions more likely.
How Calm Pass handles this
Before any lesson unlocks, Calm Pass asks three safety questions: about bites, reactions to people, and sudden changes or pain. If any answer is yes, it points you to the right kind of help, unlocks the muzzle comfort lessons for free, and offers a full refund if you'd rather not continue. You can read more on our FAQ.
